Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda. Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
With volunteer work, money and material donations, Habitat has constructed over 175,000 houses, providing a decent home to almost 900,000 people in 100 countries.
Habitat is a grassroots movement. It carries out its mission on a local level through organized groups called “affiliates”. All sorts of people get together to form a Habitat affiliate in their community in order to improve others' housing situation. Fund-raising, housing construction, family selections and other key decisions are made on a local level. Habitat’s central office and regional offices offer information, training, support and other services to all its affiliates.
Habitat´s houses are sold to affiliate families without a profit and are financed through reasonable loans. Monthly payments required from affiliate families go to a “Fund for Humanity”, a revolving fund that is utilized to build more houses. Families also help construct others’ homes. Today, there are more than 2,300 active affiliates in more than 100 countries around the world.
